When reports began to surface about the Aug. 2 arrest of “The Dukes of Hazzard” star Tom Wopat following accusations of lewd behavior against a female costar, fans were understandably disappointed in good ole Luke Duke.
But as more details have emerged regarding his drug use, people have really become genuinely concerned.
The star of the much-loved TV series was arrested in Massachusetts not only on indecent assault and battery charges, but police also said that they found what they thought to be cocaine in his possession. And now, in a statement from Tom and his team, it looks as though the drug use has been an ongoing problem for the actor.
The statement says that Tom “will be taking personal time to address his ongoing struggle with substance abuse. While death and illness in the family, combined with the intensity of his recent schedule, certainly contributed to his misstep, Tom definitely understands that sobriety is the sole course for a successful future and will take immediate steps to achieve it.”
While the statement goes on to say that Tom has deep regrets over the alleged groping incident, he did not admit to any specific wrongdoing. His accuser is an actress in a stage production of “42nd Street,” which Tom had been set to star in until his arrest.
Here’s hoping Tom gets the help he needs moving forward.
