Dolly Parton has written some of the greatest country songs of all time, but she’s also got a knack for wringing every last bit of emotion out of someone else’s song, too. Dolly’s latest cover song is her take on Brandi Carlile’s signature song, “The Story,” and it’s guaranteed to give you chills.

Brandi wrote the song when she was a young woman, but the lyrics tell the story of a woman who has lived some life. Coming from Dolly, who turned 71 this year, the line “All of these lines across my face, tell you the story of who I am” takes on a deeper meaning. Dolly’s approach is simple, straightforward and powerful as she delivers a strong vocal performance.

Dolly’s song is included on Brandi’s album, “Cover Stories,” which celebrates the 10th anniversary of her landmark album, also titled “The Story.” Pearl Jam, Old Crow Medicine Show and My Morning Jacket’s Jim James also contribute their versions of Brandi’s songs on the project.

For country fans, you’ll recognize Miranda Lambert harmonizing with her boyfriend, Anderson East, on a cover of Brandi’s song “Josephine,” as well.
