Garth Brooks made CMA Awards history in 2016 when he won a record fifth Entertainer of the Year trophy. He dominated the category four times in the ’90s, and this latest win came two years into his record-breaking “World Tour.” He’s nominated for the show’s top prize again this year.

Garth has fond memories of that night claiming the top prize at the CMA’s 50th annual show in 2016.

He tells Rare Country, “Little Taylor [Swift] was the one that announced it. When I heard the name, I just wanted to hug the guys [the other nominees]. Carrie [Underwood] was backstage. She was the other [nominee]. I didn’t get to hug her.”

Even though Garth’s name is the one on the CMA Awards statue, he is quick to share all the glory with the hard-working band and crew that make his tours possible.

Says Garth, “When [Taylor] handed me the award, all I could think about from that moment on was getting into the hands of the band and crew. Those people that show up first [and are the] last to leave. You’re talking 400 shows. These gays have kept an amazing focus. I’ve got to tell you, do I want to hand it to them again this year? You bet your butt I do.”

Garth’s “World Tour” has now played for more than six million fans, so there’s a really good chance he will claim that Entertainer prize again. No matter how the night goes, Garth feels like he’ll be walking away a winner thanks to his tour mate and wife, Trisha Yearwood.

He says, “I’m gonna leave with the most gorgeous woman on the planet anyway. So, that night’s gonna be fun for me no matter what happens.”

Look for Garth to perform on “The 51st Annual CMA Awards,” airing Wednesday, Nov. 8 on ABC.
