Appearing on the CMA stage with no formal introduction, Rascal Flatts and Dierks Bentley began their performance of Montgomery Gentry’s massive hit “My Town.” And then it hit us all – this was going to be a tribute to Montgomery Gentry and specifically Troy Gentry, who died in a helicopter crash in September.

With Rascal Flatts’ Gary LeVox wearing Troy’s iconic Batman shirt and Troy’s wife shedding tears in the crowd, they tore into a respectful version of “My Town.”

But just as the crowd stood, they received the biggest shock of the night.

Eddie Montgomery was onstage and ready to sing again. And then the crowd went nuts.

“This is MY town,” Eddie sang to the adoring crowd.

And yes, Eddie, it always will be … forevermore.
