Story of the Year: Blake Shelton
In 2016, Blake Shelton returned with a new album called “If I’m Honest,” and that title described the content on his new album to a “T.” The project came on the heels of his divorce from Miranda Lambert and subsequent romance with Gwen Stefani, whom he’s been seeing for more than a year now.
The entire situation played out in the public eye, and Blake dealt with it all head-on with his first single, “Came Here to Forget.”
And the fans couldn’t get enough.
As a result, the release of that song was just named the winner of the Story of the Year category in this year’s inaugural Rare Country Awards.
Blake was very happy to learn about this award from his fans.
He tells us, “When I set out, I certainly didn’t think or plan on or even wish to win an award after the year that I’ve had. But I’m excited. The fact that I was able to make something great out of a lot of things I’ve gone through — a lot of ’em were great, though. So, thank you guys for voting for me. I love you very much. Thank you, Rare Country.
Certainly, the fans were looking for clues about what happened in the split between country music’s biggest couple, and “Came Here to Forget” gave the fans just that. Blake himself said, “I don’t think I’ve ever had a song before that’s such a direct look into my life.”
By addressing his personal life head-on, Blake cleared the air for everyone so he could just get on with life. He’s clearly in love with Gwen Stefani, and the couple has shared their love story on social media all year long.
Kudos to Blake for just laying it all out there, and a big thumbs up to our Rare Country voters for choosing this moment as the Story of the Year.
We couldn’t agree more.
